NIGHTLIFE
California law does not allow the sale and consumption of alcoholic
drinks to minors under 21 years old. It is necessary to show a legally recognized
ID, such as a driver's license or passport, to enter bars and nightclubs.
Bars close at 2 a.m. and some nightclubs are open later, but do not serve alcohol.
Many bars and restaurants have excellent jazz music and some restaurants have piano bars.
Single bars are found in local neighborhoods such as Union Street, Fillmore Street
and in the Mission District on Valencia and Mission Streets.
RESTAURANTS
The cosmopolitan
character, together with the rich variety of the fresh regional
products and the abundance of seafood have made San Francisco
the American gastronomical heaven and the cradle of the "California
Cuisine."
Lunch in United States is often eaten in less than an hour and
can be a sandwich, a soup or a salad. Americans often dine quite
early in the evening. Normal dining hours are from 11.30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. for lunch and 6.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. for dinner. Dinner prices
are generally more expensive than lunch prices even if the meals
ordered are the same.
Many restaurants require dinner reservations. They can be made
by phone or through the hotel's concierge.
It is necessary to leave a tip of 15% of the total amount of the
bill. In San Francisco smoking is forbidden in all restaurants and bars.
